June - July (ish) update

It’s been a wild two months!

Semester 1 finished (I think) very well with CF and everything at USP. We ended our series on Proverbs in our main meetings and managed to tackle a few of the minor prophets in our cell groups. Encouragingly many of our 1-1 partnerships refused to stop meeting during exams! I’ll explain a bit more of how things went in my soon-to-be-uploaded prayer letter for June, the distribution of which has been slowed a little by my trip to Santo and some blog issues.

Amidst the work end of things I’ve also had a steady stream of visitors coming to check out V-land under the excuse of my being here. This was initially a really weird experience of having Australian friends abruptly in my new context…but I got the hang of it and have had a great time playing tour guide, showing off my limited language skills, and catching up with everyone.

In the five days between the Winches departing and my little bro and some church mates arriving I snuck in a visit to Santo, the largest island in the Vanuatu chain, and the place that really stole my interest in 2006. I returned to Talua Ministry Training Centre where we stayed back then, but this time I roomed with the Williamsons, an expat family lecturing and helping with the Vanuatu Bible commentary project (I hope to blog on this soon as it’s a very exciting and interesting affair!). Over the course of the week I met with all the staff about the strategic implications of university ministry in Vanuatu and the South Pacific as a whole as well as a number of key students who we hope to get to SPRTE – the regional training conference for AFES in December this year. I also managed to score myself a gig teaching some Old Testament at one of the nearby little rural bible schools (Navota Farm) in September which should be great fun! All I have to do now is write four weeks of material on the Pentateuch…in Bislama…hmm…

Yep, bislama bible commentary – very exciting stuff! They’ve even got a test commentary on Mark up and running…

Yes – scary eh? You don’t tend to say ‘pentateuch’ but ‘buk we Moses i raetem’ (the books that Moses wrote)…
