Santo Postcard 1

Well, it’s been almost two weeks since I got back from Santo, but in keeping with the efficiency of Vanuatu Post, I offer these digital postcards to fill in the Missing Month…

Postcard One…

To my friends,
Hello from Santo! The first thing I did – and the main reason for my coming here in the first place – was to begin the teaching at Navota Farm, home to the newly-form Santo Presbytery Bible School. Back in July, I was invited by Ps Daniel Boe, the dude with the unenviable task of setting up the new school, to come and help out with the teaching of the bible courses for a month. For a bunch of reasons, my one month ‘Introduction to the Bible’ lessons were compressed into an intensive week and a half. This was pretty hectic, especially since my nerves in teaching in Bislama meant we had to repeat the first few lessons (Creation up to Moses) because they didn’t really understand me first time around. Things got a lot better after that as my language caught up to my speaking, and the students began to catch my occasionally idiosyncratic turns of phrase. God was gracious, and by the end of the course, most of the ten began to grasp a rudimentary biblical theology – perhaps not being able to place passages in the context of the biblical story, but certainly understanding there is a central story! I’m a bit sad I didn’t get to spend more time with them, they – like most young people – would benefit from some personal discipleship. Unfortunately, no sooner had I finished teaching they were off to four weeks holiday!
