Vanuatu and You
One of the great blessings of my time at SPRTE was having literally dozens of conversations with people passionate about serving Christ and very keen to investigate doing so in Vanuatu. With the help of Ross the Boss (current director of SIL Vanuatu) I’ve compiled a snapshot of the kind of people we’d love to invite/cajole/shanghai…
- People willing to work long term: build relationships, learn complex languages and cultures
- People who are linguistically and culturally flexible (12 nations present on campus, inc. innumerable sub-cultures e.g. Indo-Fijian) – and love learning lots about all of them!
- People who are able to teach clearly and plainly – and able to learn all over again what ‘clear’ and ‘plain’ mean in this environment!
- People who are able to fit into existing churches, even ones we struggle being part of, and humbly work to reform them by example rather than confrontation
- People who are willing to translate the Bible and write resources in local languages
- People who are creative in gospel presentations (cf. perception of high gospel literacy above – need to able to bring out the gospel from varied texts and varied angles e.g. best response this year was to talk on Work and Rest from Matthew 12 with Jesus as ‘Lord of Rest’) especially in a salvation-history context
- People who build applications directly and clearly from biblical texts to avoid moralising
- People who like to eat sticky food with lots of fruit and root veges (and HEAPS of coconut)
- People who are sensitive to ‘badly-churched’ and ‘spiritually wounded’ students, especially young men
- People who are gifted in personal discipleship with a wide variety of people
- People who are loving and able to understand what makes people tick (e.g. discern honesty from ‘what they want to hear’ responses, completely unWestern mindset, different thought processes…)

Do they have to meet all those criteria? I think Jesus may be busy elsewhere…
